Detroit Lakes, MN (June 29, 2020) – Detroit Mountain Recreation Area is excited to unveil their new natural play area on July 15th along with an addition to their mountain bike park, with the opening of a new gravity trail, a new singletrack mountain biking trail, and a progressive skill building trail.

In December 2018, Detroit Mountain Recreation Area (DMRA) received a $1.2 million grant from the state's Parks and Trails Legacy Grant Program. The grant allowed for the 4-season recreation area to grow the property with 147 additional acres, develop a natural play area, paving and landscaping near their Landslide Tubing Park, as well as an expansion to Detroit Mountain’s bike park.

The natural play area design came from landscape architecture firm Land Elements out of Fargo, ND. The play area is designed to be exploratory in nature, with features made of natural materials like logs and boulders, as well as some commercially produced elements consisting of a tunnel, two slides, and a climbing net.

The newly acquired acreage had allowed Detroit Mountain to expand their mountain bike trail system. Pathfinder Trail Builders arrived in early Summer 2019 to start on the development of 4 new singletrack XC bike trails, including a new skills trail. As well as building 4 new downhill gravity trails, nearly doubling the size of Detroit Mountain’s original downhill trails to 10 in total. The expansion has diversified Detroit Mountain’s network of trails to attract riders of all skill levels.

"We are excited to grow upon our environmental recreation offerings for our summer & fall seasons.” Detroit Mountain’s General Manager, Jeff Staley said. “With the expansion of our trail system and natural play area there are more options for outdoor active play with a great mix of natural and wooden features.”

Detroit Mountain offers summer programming for those who are interested in the sport of mountain biking. Starting this summer, they introduced a new series of kid’s camps, with one of the camps having a specific focus on Mountain Biking 101, more information can be found on Detroit Mountain’s website.

Detroit Mountain also offers mountain bike instruction for teenagers and adults on a monthly basis. The course is intended for people who are new to the sport or want to increase their level of skill and understanding for mountain biking.

On Wednesday, July 15th, Detroit Mountain will celebrate the completion of their Parks and Trails Legacy Grant with a ribbon cutting at 4pm with the Detroit Lakes Chamber of Commerce and DMRA’s board members. The natural play area will then officially open at 4:30pm for individuals of all ages. Along with a local food truck, Woodfire Pizza being onsite from 4pm-7:30pm.
